Why Shoot On-Location Instead of in a Studio?
Not every corporate photo needs a studio backdrop or a conference ballroom. Executive portraits, team headshots, and branded content often work better shot on location.
A studio gives you total lighting control and a neutral, repeatable background — the right call for a large team headshot day where consistency across thirty people matters more than anything else.
On-location work trades some of that control for a backdrop that says something specific: a downtown skyline says scale, a converted warehouse says creative energy, a clean architectural line says precision. The choice should follow the message, not the other way around.

The Locations
Where We Shoot Corporate Work in Los Angeles
Each backdrop communicates something different before the subject says a word.
Downtown LA: Architecture and Scale
Downtown's mix of glass towers, historic architecture, and the Arts District's exposed-brick warehouses covers a wide range of tones in a compact area. A financial or legal executive photographed against clean modern glass reads as established and precise. The same portrait against Arts District brick and steel reads as a founder, not a corporation.
Timing: midday sun between tall buildings creates harsh shadow patterns that shift by the minute. Early morning or late afternoon gives even, directional light and far more usable frames per hour on site.
Your Own Office or Workspace
Often overlooked, and frequently the strongest option. A team photographed in their actual workspace produces the environmental photography that fills a careers page and a company overview deck without resorting to stock imagery. It is also the only backdrop that is unmistakably yours — no competitor can use the same location.
What to prepare: clear the spaces being used the day before, not the morning of. Identify one or two rooms with window light and enough depth for a portrait setup.
Beverly Hills and West LA: Polish
Tree-lined streets, clean storefronts, and understated architecture make Beverly Hills and the surrounding West LA corridor a strong choice for executive portraits that need to read as established and refined rather than corporate-generic. Frequently the right call for law firms, wealth management, and luxury-adjacent brands where the location reinforces trust.
Light: The Detail That Decides It
Los Angeles light is strong and direct for most of the day, which is more of a liability outdoors than an asset. Golden hour gives soft, directional light with none of the harsh overhead shadow midday produces on a face. If the schedule only allows midday, shaded doorways, building overhangs, and the north side of a structure are the practical fallback.

Matching
Choosing the Right Backdrop for Your Industry
Match the location to what the image needs to communicate, not to what looks most striking in isolation.
Financial, legal, healthcare — clean architectural lines, Beverly Hills or West LA polish, or a well-appointed office interior. The backdrop should support trust, not compete for attention.
Startups, creative, media — Arts District brick and steel, or the actual workspace. The energy of the location should match the energy of the pitch.
Team and culture content — the real office, almost always. Authenticity beats a more photogenic location that isn't actually where the work happens.

Settle Permits Before the Shoot Date
Some public and semi-public locations require a permit for commercial photography, and requirements vary by property and by city department. Confirm it before the day rather than discovering a restriction on site. Private locations, including your own office, avoid this entirely.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Should corporate headshots be shot in a studio or on location?
Studio suits large team days where consistency across every person matters most. On-location work trades some lighting control for a backdrop that communicates something specific, such as architecture, workspace, or neighborhood character, which is often worth it for executive portraits and branded content.
What is the best time of day for outdoor corporate photography in LA?
Early morning or the hour before sunset, when light is soft and directional rather than harsh and overhead. Midday sun in Los Angeles creates unflattering shadows on faces and, downtown, unpredictable shadow patterns between buildings.
Do we need a permit to shoot corporate photography on location?
Some public and semi-public locations require a commercial photography permit, and requirements vary by property and jurisdiction. This should be confirmed before the shoot date. Private locations, including your own office, avoid this entirely.
Is shooting in our own office a good option?
Often the best one. It produces genuine environmental photography for careers pages and company materials, and it is the one backdrop no competitor can use. Clearing the space and identifying good window light in advance makes a significant difference in the result.
